Mountain Top Library
A 1950’s Community Center in the Catskills was abandoned for decades before being rescued by a 100-year old local library that had outgrown its residential location. The enormous “cathedral” clear span open space proved to be a glorious fit for the Mountain Top Library. The existing wood ceiling and gigantic glulam beams cleaned up beautifully to create a spectacular volume. Single story spaces containing offices, meeting rooms and restrooms were designed with balconies on top for additional reading areas, and to give a comfortable scale to the large space. The Library has been intensively used by the locals, and has become a defacto new Community Center as well.
